Looking to create more accurate interpreter clothing, understand period construction and review original source material? Join instructor Chantal Filson for a two-day Master Class on original 19th century pattern diagrams. Learn how to find, analyze, enlarge and convert diagrams into sewing patterns with simple, inexpensive tools. What do the squiggly markings mean? How do you translate them into sewing instructions? Can you use diagrams to sew for a Victorian doll? What do you do if you are a size 20 and the diagram has a 32 bust?

Learn these and more! Working with 19th century pattern diagrams involves much more than simply making them bigger. Review determining grainlines, apportioning scales, schematics vs patterns and various sizes/body types/proportions. The seminar offers an extensive look at simple methods of enlarging, original source material, the various types of diagrams, analyzing the accompanying illustrations, spotting mistakes and working with diagrams in other languages. Students will also learn what’s not included in original diagrams- crucial info specific to the design they will need for patterning and sewing.

Examples of garments made with original pattern diagrams will also be shown, with a focus on incorporating period techniques and the mysteries of items such as dolman wraps and foundation linings. The class will focus on women's diagrams of the late 19th century, but will cover both earlier and later examples. The skills and knowledge learned in this course may be applied to diagrams of other eras and diagrams for any gender.

Students will receive worksheets and a pdf handout with links and info. A list of basic tools required for demo exercises (ruler, string, pencil, etc) will be provided, and all Costume On Master Classes include welcome packet and additional help as needed beyond the class, both from the instructor and in a Facebook group.
