2022 Annual Conference in Tacoma, Washington

ALHFAM Conference addresses “The Future of the Past”

Remaining relevant in a fast-paced, technology-driven society can be a challenge for heritage organizations. This June, the Association of Living History, Farm and Agricultural Museums (ALHFAM) is hosting its annual meeting in Tacoma, WA to discuss “The Future of the Past.” The conference, hosted by Fort Nisqually in partnership with Metro Parks Tacoma and the Fort Nisqually Foundation, will prioritize discussions about diversity, equity and inclusion at cultural institutions and the role living history will play in future museum interpretation.

ALHFAM, a professional organization that serves individuals and organizations involved in the collection, preservation or interpretation of material culture, traditional skills, and historical processes, has been at the forefront of the growth and professionalization of the use of living history techniques in museum programs. “Experiential learning – or learning by doing – allows visitors to relate to subject matter in a way that creates deeper meaning,” says Jim Lauderdale, Fort Nisqually Living History Museum Supervisor and Chair of the 2022 ALHFAM Conference. “ALHFAM is guided by its mission to share practical knowledge and skills among those who make history relevant to contemporary lives.”

The 2022 Conference, its first in-person meeting since 2019, will do just that. Professional development field trips and service projects to regional heritage sites that employ living history and share the stories of diverse communities in the Pacific Northwest are a large focus of the conference. Attendees will visit the Museum of Flight and Klondike Gold Rush National Park in Seattle, the Puyallup Canoe Landing Place and Reservation, the Squaxin Island Museum and Library Research Center, Fort Nisqually Living History Museum and other regional attractions. Sessions and workshops offer discussions on including diverse voices, attracting new audiences, and building innovative programs to serve broad audiences. Scheduled sessions range from discussions on building summer camp programs for immigrant populations, creating museum podcasts, the history of transgender populations in the West, to restoring heirloom crops.

Annual traditions are also returning, allowing attendees to reconnect and socialize with one another. The Smoked, Salted and Pickled Reception features member-prepared cured, preserved, and pickled foods, the annual Fashion Show highlights period clothing, and the Ploughing Competition brings interpreters and livestock together to plow Fort Nisqually Living History Museum’s heritage wheat field using traditional techniques.

Early Bird registration for the 2022 Conference is now open for both ALHFAM members and non-members. Attendees can choose from single day and full conference registration. Information can be found at https://alhfam.org/2022-Conference.

Join us for our "A Year On The Field" project and become part of a unique, global study with friends and colleagues from many areas of interest!

Our main questions for the project:

1) How is wheat grown in different regions of the world and how have the cultivation methods changed over the centuries?

2) What varieties were (and are) cultivated, and what wheat products do we know of?

We are looking for:

- farmers

- museums

- living history farms

- archaeological open-air museums

who document all steps of wheat cultivation and processing with us for a year on site

We are also looking for:

- Scientists

- Collection staff

- Bakers

who want to provide us with insights into individual aspects of wheat cultivation, varieties and final wheat products through the centuries

Our goals (and passion):

- to enable a global exchange on the historical methods of cultivation and harvest, regional and era differences, of wheat

- current importance of wheat in current culture or historical recipes

- to promote regional, national, and international networking of museums, research and producers

- to create an increased public attention for sustainable cultivation methods through intensive reporting in word, image and film

- to strengthen the importance of museums in public discourse and agriculture

Incorporate this project in your daily routines, include school projects, students and volunteers to split the work load and to intensify public engagement.

For your information:

How much time does the project take?

The pilot phase will initially run for a year, to begin in autumn 2021. You will plant and cultivate as normal. You need only create regular documentation, which will take less than an hour per week, and submit to the project.

Would you like to participate?

ALHFAM’s First Virtual Plowing Match

ALHFAM will hold their first Virtual Plowing Match for the 2021 Conference, hosted by the FARM Professional Interest Group. This event is meant to be fun and is designed for any ALHFAM member, however experienced. Acknowledging that entrants will come from different sites with different resources, the judges will endeavor to take into account entrants’ ground, ability and equipment; including the type of plow used and the plowing for which it was intended.

Each entrant should plow an ideally level plot of no less than 50 feet but, if possible, should aim for a minimum of 100 feet or 30 meters in length. There is no maximum length of plot but the same rules will apply.

The judges will award a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place winner in each category: Oxen Beginner; Oxen Experienced; Equine-assisted Beginner; Equine-assisted Experienced; Equine-Unassisted; and Tractor. The winners will be announced and edited clips from the 1st Place winners’ submissions will be presented during the virtual conference. Ribbons, purchased by the FARM PIG, will be distributed at a later date.

The FARM PIG would like to encourage participation in this match by as many members as possible. If you are an Institutional Member interested in hosting members who are not attached to a site with draft animals, tractor, plow, land, or the necessary equipment, please email Jim Lauderdale. Likewise, members without said animals and equipment may contact the former, who will attempt to match interested members with host sites. Individual Members must comply with all operating policies of the Institutional Member site.

All entries should be submitted by May 10, 2021 and should be sent HERE.

Strategic Partnership Announcement: ALHFAM / Look Around You Ventures

The Association for Living History, Farm and Agricultural Museums (ALHFAM) and Look Around You Ventures (LAYV) are pleased to announce a new strategic partnership to create exciting and entertaining online educational videos about American history.

ALHFAM has been at the forefront of the growth and professionalization of living history techniques in museum programs, with members across the United States and in many other countries around the world.

Look Around You Ventures creates high-quality historic video programs through its current web series “Civil War Digital Digest” and “Revolutionary Gazette” (the latter scheduled for release in Fall 2020).

Combining the knowledge of ALHFAM’s member institutions with the attention to detail and high-quality production capabilities of LAYV, new videos will highlight the technology in use at the time of the American War of Independence and the United States Civil War. Our goal is to help students, teachers, re-enactors and history enthusiasts connect with American history, while they learn about the people who lived, fought and survived these conflicts.

Crafting connections and building interest in these eras will highlight the range of interactive opportunities the public can find at ALHFAM sites across the United States and around the world.

As museums and historic sites begin to safely open, watch for new episodes in both series to begin carrying the ALHFAM logo very soon!

The 2020 Western Region Meeting Has Been Cancelled

The COVID Chronicles

When we last left our intrepid museum staff, they were trying to discern the person who had pronounced the ancient Chinese curse “May you live in interesting times.” Perhaps there would be a way to reverse the curse if the source was located. After nearly two months of quarantine status, there was desperation on their part to resume life as it had been.

As they were grappling with this problem, word came down from on high that there was a light at the end of the tunnel. This caused great joy in the staff as they hoped it would be the headlight of an oncoming locomotive. This would indicate a miracle as the train had stopped coming to town nearly 40 years before and the tracks had been torn up for decades. If miracles were in the works, perhaps they could get in line for one.

Alas, this was not the case. As they investigated further, it was found that the ghost of Diogenes of Sinope had brought his lamp to town, still looking for an honest man, but having found the task too overwhelming in this day and age, had hung the lamp on the Rough Rider monument in the courthouse plaza and left town. County officials, fearing that the presence of the lamp would cause a social distancing nightmare, removed it and in so doing, extinguished it. Thinking that the lamp looked old and hoping that it might contain a genie with an unused wish, rubbed it until most of the patina was gone. Not getting their wish, they took it to the museum because it “looked old.”

At the museum, they found the gates closed and a sign that indicated that you needed to call to make a delivery. This they did, summoning a close relative of a genie, a museum curator. Upon telling the curator their story, the curator indicated that it not only had most of the original finish removed, but also that the attribution was dubious and thus it did not fit within the museum’s collections mission statement. Learning this, the county officials left the lamp at the gate and went their way, thus creating a Corona “dump and run.”

While all of this was transpiring, the other staff received word from on high that a sacrifice must be made to facilitate reopening the facilities to the public. Wondering if a mouse might satisfy the edict, since mice were known to make their way into some of the buildings, a search was made for traps. It was then brought up that this was the wrong time of year for mice to come indoors. This came as a disappointment to the chief curator as he wanted to extract vengeance from all mice for one having eaten the emergency chocolate bar imported from Canada. Someone mentioned that a chicken might suffice and that two of the living history interpreters were known to have chickens.

While trying to decide whom to ask for a chicken, word came down from on high that this was an important sacrifice and that it demanded everyone’s attention. The staff wondered if it would be one of them.

And so, we leave our museum staff to ponder the question of what the sacrifice might be. Come back next week for the continuing saga of our museum staff in The COVID Chronicles.

Unfortunately, dear reader, there is no next issue. The staff learned that the sacrifice was events and that among them was hosting the 2020 ALHFAM Western Region meeting in October. We hope that 2021 will see better times with less uncertainty. With that in mind, we would hope to host the meeting next year.

Mick Woodcock

Chief Curator and ALHFAM Western Region Rep.

ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING THE 2020 ANNUAL MEETING AND CONFERENCE

Due to the current unprecedented circumstances brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the ALHFAM Board regrets to announce the cancellation of the 2020 Annual Meeting and Conference scheduled for June 21-25 in Boston.

Although anticipated, this was a decision reached with a heavy heart, and we would like to acknowledge the incredible work that was put into the planning by Tom Kelleher, Deb Friedman, Lauren McCormack, Sue Hanson, Melissa Vickers, Victoria Haynes, Rhys Simmons, and Dave Hruska. Thank you also to those who submitted session proposals and contributed to the development of an exceptional program. We look forward to hearing from you in the future.

Refunds and cancellations for those who registered for the conference will be processed over the next few weeks. We appreciate your patience as we work through that process. In addition, the Board will be exploring options to conduct a virtual Business Meeting as per our by-laws and creative strategies that will provide us with an opportunity to commemorate and celebrate our 50th Anniversary.

Although it is difficult to break the tradition of seeing ALHFAM “return home” to Old Sturbridge Village every decade, for various financial and administrative reasons the Board and this year’s planning committee have decided to maintain the conference calendar as it currently stands. We look forward to gathering again in person at the 2021 Conference at Sauder Village.

Advocacy Alert: Support Economic Relief for the Museum Community

ADVOCACY ALERT: SUPPORT ECONOMIC RELIEF FOR THE MUSEUM COMMUNITY

The American Alliance of Museums reached out to its affiliates on March 19 to share their action plan during the COVID-19 crisis. Congress is moving swiftly to pass a massive economic relief package in response and the Alliance is working to ensure the museum community is included. ALHFAM past president, and our longtime “Museum Advocacy Day” representative Pete Watson confirmed ALHFAM’s support of this advocacy initiative and thanked the AAM for their leadership in advancing it. The AAM also encourages you to reach out directly to your legislators. You can use their online action center to find your state and federal legislator information, and personalize your message to Congress in just a few clicks. You can use the same messaging with your state and local legislators.

Similarly in Canada the Canadian Museums Association is advocating for the well-being of the sector by requesting a dedicated museum relief fund to support lost revenues and many provincial museum associations are offering pandemic response resources.

Contributions cover all aspects of developing and running a living history site.

Including contributions on strategic planning, human resource management, research programs, collection policies, and engagement with varied audiences, including indigenous groups, the book demonstrates how to approach such tasks from a living history perspective. Topics unique to the sector, such as re-enactment, historic trade crafts, and working with machinery and livestock, are also covered. Each essay is briefly introduced and contextualized by the editors, while the collection is bookended by a new foreword and afterword from Debra A. Reid, and an introduction from the editors.

Representing the collective wisdom of the Association for Living History, Farm and Agricultural Museums (ALHFAM) members across the decades, The Living History Anthology provides a valuable resource for all living history practitioners. It should also be of interest to students and scholars studying living history.

ALHFAM members can purchase this book at a discount. Go here for details.
ALHFAM Board funds Skills Training and Preservation (STP) Initiative

The ALHFAM Board advanced a key component of its 2018 -2020 Strategic Workplan during its fall meeting by approving the proposal of a task force charged with mapping the work of a new administrative committee on Skills Training and Preservation. The proposal includes 2019 funding for new training workshops, a project to document skills using short videos ("SkillClips"), a video library accessible through A.S.K., and an internship in skill documentation.

The new Skills Training and Preservation Committee is charged with leading ALHFAM's efforts to collect the practices, processes, systems, arts and skills that are preserved and presented through "living history.” To accomplish its goals, the committee will work with PIG Chairs, Regional Reps, Annual Conference Planners and individual members and sites, to inventory and catalogue skills, identify and document 'at-risk' and endangered skills, and support and organize skills training.

The committee is co-chaired by Board members Lauren Muney and past Board president Pete Watson and includes Ed Schultz, Sonrisa Crespin, Alison Dobier and advisors Cody Joliff and Jon Hallman.

In its proposal to the Board, the Skills Training and Preservation Task Force presented the following assessment of the challenge ahead:

"Collections management is a skill that is widely held among museum professionals, yet, one that is not uniformly applied to collections of non-material culture. The importance of creating, managing and using living history collections to advance the field historical research, documentation and education is not an endeavor peculiar to ALHFAM, its partners in AIMA and EXARC, or to re-enactors of military, industrial or social history. However, collecting “skills” is rarely, if ever, seen in traditional museums.

One of ALHFAM's greatest challenges is to take inventory of, document and share the countless, incredible array of skills held by, and offered through, its membership. To enable this, ALHFAM will create a culture that recognizes skills that are being lost, or soon to be lost, and find ways to place them in new hands. ALHFAM members will learn to take the knowledge and skill we have as curators of material culture, and apply it to the business of preserving the intangible culture of skills. ALHFAM members will become proficient at sharing skills with the public, enabling them to use their hands in problem solving -- allowing them try their hand at the doing, making and work that we bring to life. As museum professionals entrusted with the collection and care of those skills, we are challenged to teach the them not just to our colleagues, but to all."

New ALHFAM Website & Membership Management System

The New ALHFAM Website & Membership Management System

In the fall of 2015, ALHFAM began a new chapter in the way we communicate and interact with our membership. The most obvious change is visible through our redesigned and reorganized website. But the really big change will be the way you, as a member, will be able to manage your own membership profile and the way in which ALHFAM will communicate with you about your membership status. With this new system, we will communicate with you increasingly via email: Your membership reminders, renewal invoices, event registrations, etc., will come directly to you as email communications.

To help members with this change, and to continue to assist you, we have started a seven-month "training" series about the new membership system and the features of the new website. There will be a link in each upcoming eUpdate that will take you to a Membership Management System Information Sheet, each of which will provide you with the information you will need to know in order work with this exciting new membership system. The FAQ sheet will be continually updated as new question arise.
How To Use the ALHFAM Website & MMS
Darwin Kelsey Obituary

Sadly, ALHFAM and the greater museum and agricultural communities have lost
another influential and beloved friend. Darwin Kelsey, a Cooperstown
graduate and ALHFAM founder (and our second president) passed away on
Saturday. Among many other accomplishments, Darwin played a key role in
creating a historical agriculture program at Old Sturbridge Village,
developing the innovative Lake Farm Park in Ohio, and more recently promoting
local agriculture by founding the Countryside Conservancy which promotes
farmers' markets. He will be greatly missed.

Obituary: Blake D. Hayes

Blake Dean Hayes passed away peacefully at his home in Cherry Valley, NY on July 7, 2016 among family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Gerald (Gerry) Hayes and Harriette Hayes, of Sidney, NY. Blake was born in Sidney, NY on March 28, 1950. He graduated from Sidney High School (1968) and received a B.A. in history from the University of Albany. With his love of history, he studied Preservation Technology at St. Lawrence College in Brockville, Ontario and pursued a career in historical preservation, restoration and museum work. Blake worked for Georgia Agrirama, Tifton, GA and The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, Dearborn, MI. His many restoration projects included the Harvey Firestone Farm and House, the Buckminster Fuller Dymaxion House, a 1940's diner and gas station, the Wright Brothers' Home and 1960's Motown Recording Studio. He was a co-creator of the Henry Ford Museum American Automobile and Made in America exhibits. After returning to Cherry Valley, he gathered a number of museum professionals into The Cherry Valley Group. With CVG he created interpretive and master plans, exhibits and staff training for historic sites, museums and non-profit organizations throughout the Northeast, Southern and Midwestern United States. Blake was active in preserving and promoting local historic sites and organizations. He served on numerous community boards and preservation organizations in Tifton, GA; Ypsilanti, MI; Greenbay, WI, and especially Cherry Valley, NY. He received the prestigious John T. Schlebecker Award from the Association of Living History, Farm and Agricultural Museums, a professional organization in which he contributed many volunteer hours. Blake was known for his humor, hospitality, good cooking, gardening, frugality, curmudgeonly tendencies and memorable ear stands, Cowardly Lion impersonations and Wizard of Oz reenactments. His family, colleagues and friends were especially important to him. He is survived by his loving wife Lorraine Bosma of Cherry Valley, NY; daughter Rebecca Gross (Ryan) of Middleboro, MA; son Ashley Hayes of Chapel Hill, NC; stepsons Loren Sutton of Boston, MA, Brian Sutton of Los Angeles, CA and Will Sutton of Cherry Valley, NY; son in spirit Jared Fruth; granddaughters Ariella Blake Gross, Selah Elizabeth Gross and Elizabeth Ann Hayes; sister Dolores Breunig (Franz) of Sidney, NY; brother Keith Hayes (Carol) of Prince George, VA. Blake also maintained close friendships with his former wife, Martha Camp, of Ecuador and former wife and colleague, Mary Seelhorst, of Ypsilanti, MI. He enjoyed his many nieces and nephews and his favorite cat, Kitty Ga-Ga. Contributions in his memory may be sent to The Cherry Valley Community Facilities Corporation for old school maintenance at PO Box 66, Cherry Valley, NY 13320.

Using the New Website & Membership Management System

The New ALHFAM Website & Membership Management System

This Fall ALHFAM began a new chapter in the way we communicate and interact with our membership.

How To Use the New ALHFAM Website & MMS
