Skills Workshops

We welcome information about skills workshops open to ALHFAM members, living history professionals, and/or the general public for listing on the Skills Workshops page.  Workshops can be on any subject relating to historic trades and skills, professional museum skills, living history interpretation skills, as well as similar hands-on learning opportunities. The workshops may be part of a larger local, regional, national or international conference. 

The subject matter must be of interest to ALHFAM members and the organization or individual hosting the workshop must be an individual, institutional or business member of ALHFAM.  Workshops that do not meet these criteria will not be posted, and ALHFAM reserves the right to decline to post information.

    Collections Camp: Textiles
    American Assn. for State and Local History


    In June, AASLH will host a two-day workshop on the care and management of textile collections at the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History in Hartford, CT. Instructor and costume consultant Karen DePauw will lead hands-on exercises in the storage, display, care, preservation, conservation, and identification of textile artifacts, including clothing, domestic items, uniforms, quilts, flags, and more. If your organization has questions about folding versus hanging storage, displaying clothing on mannequins, identifying mystery fiber content, best practices for cleaning textiles, and prolonging the usable life of your textile collections, this is the workshop for you. Register by May 20 for the best pricing: $300 members/$425 nonmembers.

Textile Arts Private Instruction

One hour of individual, one-on-one instruction in historic textile arts such as knitting, crochet, embroidery, sewing and needlepoint at Historic Longstreet Farm, 50 Longstreet Road, Holmdel, N.J., 07733. $30 per hour / One skill per session.
