     Status:  Temporary Seasonal Position

     

    PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION

    Artificer Interpreters are full-time seasonal interpreters who bring a high level of skill in an 18th century mechanical art to the interpretation of the daily life of soldiers at Fort Ticonderoga. Artificer Interpreters use their skills both to educate visitors about their trade, but also to meet the material needs of the interpretive department at Fort Ticonderoga. Artificer Interpreters support and participate in military educational programming engaging visitors about each season’s topic within the history of Fort Ticonderoga. These historically-clothed interpreters are the public face and voice to visitors at this historic site and act with corresponding respect and professionalism. They should be vigilant sentinels of site stewardship and visitor safety while educating a wide variety of visitors through interpretive programming. Artificer Interpreters are active participants in the refining of each season’s interpretive programs, especially with regards to their particular craft.

     

    INTERPRETIVE SKILLS

    v  Required to act and dress accurately out of respect of the historical individuals they portray

    v  Apply and interpret their mechanical trade within the season’s specific interpretive topic

    v  Able to interpret and practice both their own and a variety of other 18th century mechanical skills

    v  Able to cope with a variety of weather conditions using 18th clothing and skills

    COMMUNICATION SKILLS

    • v  Able to talk to an audience of diverse age and backgrounds
    • v  Clearly communicate with large groups and individuals
    • v  Communicate effectively in verbal and written form
    • v  Presents a professional image with regards to Fort Ticonderoga in all media
    • v  Able to communicate culturally or politically sensitive information respectfully and tactfully
    • v  Work with a other members of the interpretive staff
    • v  Teach and supervise other interpretive staff in their trade.
    • v  Understand and follow the directions of the Director of Interpretation and all supervising staff..

     

    RESEARCH SKILLS

    • v  Able to read and comprehend both primary and secondary historical sources
    • v  Able to learn and utilize research techniques including transcription and artifact annotation
    • v  Able to apply research skills to public interpretation

     

    PHYSICAL EFFORT

    • v  Able to lift fifty pounds
    • v  Able to stand and walk for an extended period (up 4 for hours)
    • v  Able to be outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
    • v  Manual dexterity appropriate to the interpretive requirements

     

    SAFETY FOR OTHERS

    v  Required to safely demonstrate, use, and maintain a variety of 18th century muskets

    v  Required to safely demonstrate, use, and maintain 18th century cannons

    v  Required to safely demonstrate, use, and maintain 18th century tools

    v  Uphold the highest standards of black powder safety

     

    OVERVIEW & GOALS

    Artificer Interpreters educate visitors at Fort Ticonderoga using both the skills of the 18th century soldier and their particular mechanical art. Artificer interpreters should come with proficient skills in their trade and an eagerness to continue building their skills and applying them to the interpretive goals of a season at Fort Ticonderoga.  Artificer Interpreters must be ready and able to teach other interpreters in their mechanical art, in order to fulfill both the interpretive and practical functions of their trade work. Their skills are an important part of the experience of visitors and other interpreters at Fort Ticonderoga. Working with the Director of Interpretation, Artificer Interpreters will develop a daily or weekly public program based around their mechanical skill as part of the season’s interpretive focus. Artificer Interpreters have the opportunity not only to highlight the mechanical skill they love for visitors, but also to add materially to the interpretation of Fort Ticonderoga, extending their knowledge of the trade along the way.

     

    SCHEDULE

    Must be flexible, able to work weekends and some evening shift may be required. This is a temporary seasonal position. Fort Ticonderoga is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
