Under the supervision of Nash Farm Manager of the Convention & Visitors Bureau assists with all areas of agricultural operations and programming including educational programming, collection management, exhibitions, animal husbandry, volunteer training, routine maintenance and other duties as assigned.
Paid Internship: 13.50/hr.
Nature & Scope:
Nash Farm Intern position will offer the unique opportunity for an agricultural/interpretation studies student to work and develop programs at Nash Farm. The Internship Program provides educational opportunities for students interested in the museum profession, humanities and related fields, such as living history. This position offers a great opportunity for students to learn about the Nash Farm's collections, exhibitions and assist in developing programs. The Intern will be exposed to heritage breeds of animals, heirloom vegetable crops and historic structures in which the agricultural heritage of the Grape Vine Prairie is preserved.
Up to 80 hours in a 30 day period. Requires flexible work schedule that includes hours other than 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Position calls for working many weekend shifts and some holidays. Schedule may be variable depending on tour commitments and future site development. May work some days on site without direct supervision. Non-smoking work environment on the site, in all city buildings and vehicles. May be required to wear period costume for tours or special events. Must adhere to agency policies and procedures.
Student in good academic standing, preferably working on a degree in agriculture, animal husbandry, history, interpretation, museum studies or similar field.
Experience with livestock and other agricultural avenues preferred. Knowledge of farming tools and equipment. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. Skilled in using a computer with Windows-based word processing, spreadsheet programs, email, copier with fax and basic internet.
Experience working with, and speaking to the public helpful. Ability to follow established security and safety guidelines and procedures for staff and visitors, including emergency situations. Ability to perform a variety of maintenance, site cleaning, and animal husbandry tasks and ability to handle multiple tasks effectively.
Must pass a criminal background check and have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy.
Ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time during events and work irregular hours. Ability to lift 40 pounds (carry outreach program materials such as farm equipment, traveling trunks and small furniture pieces, and move supplies related to site cleaning and maintenance).
