Summer Collections Assistant/Intern - Hanford Mills Museum - East Meredith, NY

    Brief Description: Hanford Mills Museum (HMM) operates an authentic water and steam-powered National Register-listed historic site in East Meredith, NY. The Museum seeks a Collections Assistant to work closely with the Collections Technician on a variety of key collections projects to implement its IMLS-funded Collections Management Initiative. HMM is able to offer this position as part of a for-credit internship for students enrolled in relevant graduate or undergraduate programs.

    Responsibilities: The Collections Intern will assist the Collections Technician and other senior staff with collections care and management projects. These projects will include: conducting a collections inventory in selected historic buildings; performing basic housekeeping on collections storage areas and objects; and recording object data and catalog information in HMM’s PastPerfect database.

    Required Qualifications

    • Enrolled in or completed bachelor’s degree program in museum studies, history, education, environmental studies, or a related field
    • Ability to perform tasks that require moderate physical exertion, stand/walk for long periods on varying surfaces, inside and outside, and in a variety of conditions
    • Effective organization and time management skills
    • Strong attention to detail

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Enrolled in or completed master’s degree program in museum studies, history, education, environmental studies, or a related field
    • Knowledge of basic collections care and management practices
    • Experience with collections management software

    Duration: This position duration is expected to last approximately 10 weeks with a 40-hour work week.

    Hiring to begin February 15, 2015 on a rolling basis until filled.
