Interpretive Specialist for Livestock: Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm Historic Site - Olathe, Kansas

    Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm Historic Site in Olathe, Kansas seeks applicants for the position of Interpretive Specialist-Livestock.  The Livestock Specialist is responsible for all livestock, stagecoach operations, and the agricultural program at this dynamic, mid-nineteenth century living history site located just outside Kansas City on what was the Santa Fe Trail.  Mahaffie Historic Site is a city government-owned facility administered through Olathe Parks and Recreation. Olathe is nationally recognized for its high quality of life for residents and an outstanding school system.

    What can I expect in this position?

    • Provide vision and leadership for agricultural interpretation/programming, stagecoach operations and livestock care/management. 
    • As key member of our management team, drive the planning and delivery of the overall Mahaffie interpretive program.
    • Oversee, direct and perform a combination of both modern and historical farm work, including both crop and animal husbandry tasks (including a one cow dairy program.)
    • Interpret and portray the life, work and activities of a Kansas farmer in the mid-nineteenth century while in period clothing.
    • Support Mahaffie Historic Site programming and customer service initiatives; including but not limited to, duties associated with the delivery of experiential programming to children under the age of 18, historic dinners programs, and rental operations.
    • Ensure the safety of visitors and staff and protect the resources of the site.

    How do I qualify?

    • Pass a background check.
    • Possess a valid driver’s license.
    • Possess a High School diploma or equivalent.  Bachelor’s degree in relevant field preferred.
    • Have the ability to meet the physical demands of the position and perform farm work both indoors and out regardless of weather conditions. 
    • Pass a physical, dexterity test and drug screen.

    Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience:

    • Knowledge of modern and 19th century agricultural practices, heritage breeds, practical farming operations and livestock management and breeding.
    • The ability to diagnose livestock ailments, administer medication and refer issues to a veterinarian as required.  Maintain records of same.
    • Experience training and driving horses and oxen in public demonstrations (field work, driving) as well as providing care for small animals.
    • Familiarity with Mahaffie interpretive themes – including mid-19th century agriculture and rural life, the American Civil War, and the Santa Fe and western trails.

     Communication & Research Skills

    • Strong oral and written communication skills to meet the interpretive standards, record keeping, and safety procedure requirements of the position.
    • The ability to undertake research and to direct and instruct paid and unpaid staff about the operations of mid-19th century farms, farming practices, and their relationship to the community.

    Mechanical, Maintenance & Farming Skills

    • The ability to drive a tractor, operate barn equipment, use farm implements, etc.
    • The ability to maintain vehicles, buildings and modern and historic implements.
    • The ability to schedule and perform planting, cultivation and harvesting of crops using nineteenth century methods (hand and animal power.)
    • The ability to care for and feed farm animals – small animals to oxen and draft horses.

    Leadership & Personal Skills

    • A passion for sharing the past with all manner of audiences in a living history environment.
    • Demonstrated ability to act as a group leader:  to develop and provide paid and unpaid staff training; communicate clearly with and coach staff; assign and schedule work; monitor and evaluate programs; and ensure program standards and goals are met.
    • The initiative to set and achieve goals and the flexibility to adjust to changing situations.
    • The intrapersonal skills and positive attitude to serve as part of a team, supporting coworkers and providing an outstanding experience to visitors.
    • Willingness to work a varied schedule that includes weekends and some evenings.
