    Manager / Curator

    This pivotal role with the Region of Waterloo is an excellent opportunity for a professional with museum operations experience, knowledge of local history and a desire to make a difference. You’ll work with a dedicated team that welcomes 100,000 museum guests each year.

    As the Museum Manager / Curator, you will manage the operation of the Region of Waterloo’s museums (Waterloo Region Museum, McDougall Cottage, Joseph Schneider Haus, Doon Heritage Village, Waterloo Region Curatorial Centre), including visitor services, program delivery, exhibit development, site preservation and maintenance, and the stewardship and development of a sizable artifact collection.

    This is a significant portfolio, with overall accountability for a combined space of more than 12,000 square metres, an operating budget of $8.5 million and a 10-year capital project forecast of $28 million, as well as 29 full-time staff, 15 part-time staff, approximately 80 student employees and more than 1,000 volunteers.


    To assume the role of Manager / Curator, you will have the following profile:

    • Knowledge of the theory and practice of living history/museum operations, including research; collections management and development; artifact/historic building maintenance and conservation; gallery, program, and exhibit development; resource management; and marketing, normally acquired through a master's degree in Museum Studies, plus progressively responsible experience in a history museum.

    • Knowledge of Regional, Divisional, and museum policies and procedures, and related legislation (e.g., accessibility, health and safety, privacy).

    • Knowledge of local history and ability to conduct related research to develop exhibits, plan restorations, prepare publications, and respond to inquiries.

    • Analytical, planning, and organizational skills to analyze, interpret, and apply policies, procedures, and standards; plan and develop the museums’ operational and financial plans, objectives, and goals; develop, manage, and control budgets; and participate in planning and implementing capital and construction projects.

    • Ability to plan and prioritize work of self and others per guidelines; and deal with conflicting demands and priorities, occasional peaks, seasonal events, interruptions and multiple, fixed deadlines.

    • Leadership, negotiation, and communication skills to manage, advise, develop, and motivate staff in achieving objectives; present to varied audiences; engage the community and volunteers; and participate as an effective team member.

    • Ability to read, write, and edit correspondence, reports, proposals, plans, construction drawings, grant applications, promotional material, and contracts.

    • Computer skills using software such as Microsoft Office, a document management system, and an artifact collections management system.

    • Eligibility for membership with Canadian Museums Association and possession of, or eligibility to obtain, a valid Firearm Acquisition Certificate to handle and access firearms.

    • Ability to work some weekends as part of a regular management rotation to provide on-site supervision and respond to weekend/evening site emergencies.

    • Ability to travel to various locations within Waterloo Region.

    • Ability to support and project the Region’s values.
