Located in northeast Arkansas, Powhatan interprets the late 19th- century steamboat town of Powhatan located on the Black River. The park contains 6 historic structures: courthouse, jail, schoolhouse, church, log house and commercial building.
This position plans and presents interpretive programs and special events to park visitors, schools, civic groups, private organizations and individuals on and off site. The Park Interpreter writes news releases, brochures, reports, and other visitor publications, performs office duties, answers phones and greets visitors. Duties include researching and producing programs and exhibits, conducting public relations outreach; providing customer service; administering volunteers; performing front desk duties, and assisting with maintenance. This position supervises a small interpretive staff by interviewing, recommending for hire, assigning and reviewing work, and evaluating the performance of incumbents. It also oversees the operation of the Visitors Center, gift shop and overall Interpretive Program. Prepares and manages a park budget, monitors daily expenditures and the scheduling of work hours for employees to prevent overspending. Participates as part of a planning team to develop or expand programs and facilities, alter procedures, determine revenue sources and cost containment, monitor operations, facilities, and programs to ensure goals are met and when the Superintendent is absent, and other duties as assigned.
Must be able to work a varied shift, including weekends and holidays, and have a valid driver’s license. Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, film and digital cameras, computers, A/V equipment, artifact care, museum records, archival research and supervisory experience are preferred. A criminal background check and driving record check are required.

Applicants must meet or exceed these qualifications: The formal educational equivalent of a bachelor's degree in natural science, communications, parks and recreation management, or a related field; plus one year of experience in interpretation, program development, or a related field.
