Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village is seeking costumed historical interpreters for its summer season. Must have an interest in 19th century history and be comfortable speaking in front of large groups of people. Interpreters will be responsible for interpreting 19th century buildings as well as taking visitors on tours of the village. Hand crafts or trade skills i.e. wood carving, pottery, wood stove cooking etc. are desired but not required.

Interpretive Assistant
Heritage Hill State Historical Park

Job Summary:
The Interpretative Assistant oversees all aspects of the daily interpretation of the park including but not limited to:  interpretive supplies, equipment, laundry, cleaning, consumables, period clothing, and some training of volunteers and staff.  This position will assist in planning and implementation of special events and programming and giving tours on an as needed basis.  The Interpretative Assistant contributes to the overall mission and vision of Heritage Hill State Historical Park.

Job Accountabilities:

The following are essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the maintenance, organization, and distribution of interpretive supplies and equipment supplies used for the interpretative season, special events, and education programs.
    • Create an inventory system of interpretative supplies and equipment that indicates each item’s intended function, proper historical context, storage location, and maintenance needs.
    • Oversee the training, distribution, and usage of interpretative supplies and equipment by interpreters and volunteers.
    • Clean and maintain interpretative supplies and equipment or make necessary arrangements for the completion of this duty.
  • Responsible for the laundry and cleaning needs related to programs of the Education Department.
    • Carry out laundry needs.
    • Clean interpretative kitchen, staff workroom, laundry area, and dressing rooms as needed.
    • Assist Curator of History and Interpretation with cleaning historical building when needed.
  • Oversee the extraction, storage, and use of consumable resources related to interpretative and educational programs and monitor the supply of these resources.
    • Assist in the planning and planting of period gardens.
    • Oversees the food ways programs for summer interpretation and special events
    • Oversee the extraction of consumable resources from period gardens and other sources and make arrangements for their storage and use.
    • Monitor the supplies needed for the interpretative season, educational programs, and special events.
  •  Responsible for the research, interpreter education, organization, distribution, and maintenance of period clothing.
    • Provide researched documentation to interpreters on appropriate period clothing and accessories, and educate interpreters on proper attire, fashion, and manners.
    • Provide a system for inventorying, distributing, recording, and maintaining period clothing.
  • Assist in training volunteers and staff; provide demonstrations and workshops as needed.
  • Create and prepare crafts for special events
  • This position requires a flexible work schedule, some evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required.  May be asked to work as “staff in charge (SIC)”, occasionally.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge And Abilities:

  • Requires a minimum education of a high school diploma or equivalent.  A college degree in education,
    museum studies, or other related field and experience in a living history museum is preferred.
  • Individual must possess:  must be a self-initiator, take direction, either written or oral, well and be able to work without constant supervision.  Must be able to problem solve in a fast-paced work environment, and should posses the ability to work independently and meet deadlines while retaining flexibility.  Must be creative while being able to multi-task and be comfortable making quick decisions.  A
    working knowledge of Word and Excel based programs and other computer knowledge is a plus.  
  • Individual must possess:  strong written and verbal communication skills and be highly organized with great attention to detail.  Individual must feel comfortable wearing period clothing.  Must be willing to do duties assigned, including cleaning of buildings, artifact care and gardening.  Must relate to and communicate with adults and children.  Must have a desire for historic accuracy.

Working Conditions:  Must be able to walk, at times, one half mile without difficulty.  Prolonged sitting, standing, and occasional high pressure and long hours due to seasonality of business.

Essential Functions:

  • This person must also be able to maintain effective working relationships with visitors, volunteers and staff.
  • Ability to use a telephone and computer to receive and send information.  And able to operate required equipment with necessary physical agility, optical auditory and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to read, comprehend and speak clearly in a variety of settings.
  • This person must be able to work with a variety of people in a variety of settings.
  • Ability to represent the organization in a professional and positive manner.
  • Ability to walk or stand for an hour or more at a time.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds as necessary may be required at times.

Farm Manager & Facilities Assistant

The Plains Conservation Center (PCC) is a non-profit organization that seeks to connect people to the natural wonders of the high plains of Colorado. PCC’s main site in east Aurora includes a 1,000-acre short-grass prairie natural area, an 1837 replica Cheyenne Camp and the 1887 replica sod homestead.

We are seeking a passionate part-time farm manager and facilities assistant to join our team.  The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge and experience in maintaining and caring for livestock, heirloom gardens and a passion for historic farming, education, and teaching the public and children.

Essential Job Functions

Livestock Care:

  • Maintain and care for livestock that is representative of heritage breeds utilized on an 1887 homestead. Current livestock includes 3 steers (two of which are a trained oxen team), 2 Navajo-Churro sheep, chickens and turkey. This includes, but is not limited to, feeding, watering, cleaning chicken coop, sheep shed, and arranging for veterinary care as needed.
  • Order and maintain appropriate supplies of feed, bedding materials, etc.
  • Research, select and order heritage poultry annually in consultation with the Director of Education.
  • Maintain livestock shelters and fences to insure a healthy, safe environment for the animals and visitors.
  • Train and coordinate volunteers and staff to assist with animal care.
  • Must be able to harvest poultry for use in our historical programs.
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to maintain an authentic 1887 homestead without always using the conveniences of present day.

Heirloom Garden:

  • Plan and maintain the heirloom vegetable and herb garden to represent a typical 1887 homestead garden.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Education, select a variety of plants that are historically accurate and will be used in educational programs.
  • Train volunteers and staff to assist with garden maintenance and harvest.

Facilities:

  • Maintain and repair buildings and other structures (i.e. windmill) at the homestead.
  • Assist the Facilities Manager with minor maintenance of buildings, facilities, fences, equipment and trails across the PCC campus.

Other Duties:

  • While performing job duties, greet visitors and represent PCC in a professional manner at all times.
  • Ensure program areas are clean and well maintained to assure program quality, safety and positive visitor experiences.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Experience in livestock care and gardening.
  • Experience in working with volunteers is preferred.

Skills Required:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact appropriately with visitors, staff and volunteers.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with PCC staff and volunteers.
  • Willingness and ability to be trained in new areas of work as assigned.

Other Requirements:

  • Comfortable working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Stand and walk over uneven terrain for most of the workday.
  • Exposure to the natural hazards and hardships associated with life on the plains.
  • Work occasional evenings, overnights, and weekends as scheduled.
  • Perform physical tasks including lift and carry up to 60 pounds.
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license required by date of hire.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and maintain a driving record acceptable to PCC’s insurer.

The Plains Conservation Center (PCC) is a non-profit organization that seeks to connect people to the natural wonders of the high plains of Colorado. The PCC gives programs to over 8,000 school children and sees over 18,000 visitors a year.

Position Summary: We are seeking dynamic part-time interpreters to join our team.  The ideal candidates will demonstrate outstanding educational and interpretive skills for audiences of all ages. This is a year-round, as-needed position. Weekly hours vary and are determined by the organization’s program and project needs.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Present environmental education programs on a variety of natural and cultural history topics for elementary school groups and other age groups. These programs include 2 – 3 hour field trips on weekdays and overnight programming on weekday nights.
  • Present evening, weekend and overnight programs for scouts. Scout overnights are typically on Friday and Saturday nights.
  • Work collaboratively with adult and teen volunteers.
  • Assist with interpretive projects, special events and maintenance of interpretive facilities and materials as needed.
  • Ensure scientific and historical accuracy, quality and consistency of all programs and materials through collaboration with staff, volunteers and the Director of Education.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Minimum 1 year experience leading environmental and/or cultural history programs for children and adults.
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, interpretation, natural resources or related field preferred.
  • Experience in working collaboratively with volunteers is preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.

Skills Required

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including ability to make group presentations in fluent English.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact appropriately with visitors, staff and volunteers.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with PCC staff and volunteers.
  • Willingness and ability to be trained in new areas of work as assigned.

Other Requirements

  • Work occasional evenings, overnights, and weekends as scheduled.
  • Ability to safely handle captive education animals for programs (i.e. non-venomous snakes, turtles, salamander). Handler training is provided.

  • Actively grow your knowledge of Washington’s plantation and 18th-century trades and crafts in order to continually enhance your interpretive ability
  • Assist with special tours, student programs, and other projects as needed
