Historical Interpreter Internship
Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village

Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village is seeking college or graduate student of history, Museum or American Studies or Education for an interactive internship position. Candidate will work as costumed historical interpreters for the summer season, as well as assist with themed education camps and related interpretation programming and projects. This is an opportunity to work with an innovative and energetic staff and gain hands-on experience in the field as well as gain exposure to multiple areas of museum work. Must have an interest in 19th century history and be comfortable speaking in front of large groups of people. Hours flexible to fit credit needs.

Farm Site Historic Interpreter Internship
Claude Moore Colonial Farm

McLean, VA

The Farm Site Historic Interpreter at Claude Moore Colonial Farm is responsible for providing direct interpretive services of an 18th century tobacco farm that will include daily first person interpretation for the general public.Assisting staff members, the intern will be responsible for helping to plant and maintain period appropriate field crops (tobacco, corn, wheat etc) as well as an heirloom kitchen garden while supervising youth volunteers. Additionally, the Farm Site intern may be utilized to assist with various educational programs for school children throughout the property.

Candidates should have a background in history or agriculture and be comfortable with public speaking. Please note that this position requires the ability to work outdoors in hot and humid weather, to do strenuous physical activity, and to greet and talk to visitors of all ages as if you were truly living in the year 1771. Both paid and unpaid internships are available. However, the paid internship will be required to work 40 hours per week Wednesday-Sunday from May until August. Unpaid internships will have a more flexible work schedule. Please note, housing is not provided.

Environmental Education Apprentice - Female RoleThe Homeplace
Golden Pond, KY

Location: The Homeplace Living History Farm at Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area in Western Kentucky and Tennessee

Duties: The position demonstrates 19th century work typical of a middle class farmstead while focusing on environmental education themes when interpreting the work for the public. Also participates in planning, presentation, and evaluation of daily interpretive programs and special events for the general public and organized groups. Research and special projects related to increased customer satisfaction may be assigned as appropriate. The position will also spend at least 10% of their time delivering interpretive program presentations throughout Land Between the Lakes.

Qualifications:

Must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Education, History, Recreation, or related fields, and not currently be enrolled in school.
Warm enthusiastic demeanor that is quality customer service driven.
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
Ability to manage multiple projects.
Availability for weekend, holiday, and occasional evening work.
Valid driver’s license.

Preferred:

Strong written and oral communication skills.
Interest in historic trades such as weaving, spinning, gardening, blacksmithing, woodworking, leatherworking, etc.
Experience in handling and caring for livestock.
Computer software skills, including word processing skills and skill in database/spreadsheet, including PowerPoint.

Benefits:

Weekly stipend of $200
On site housing in fully-furnished houses or house trailers

Coggeshall Farm Museum

Spring, Summer, Fall 2013

Interning at Coggeshall Farm Museum allows students to gain a deeper understanding of history, museums, and agriculture through practical hands-on experience. Working with museum staff, interns will have the opportunity to research, design, and implement a component of the living history exhibit. Interns divide their time in half between physical, on-site work and an intellectual project. If you're looking to spend your internship collating photocopies and making coffee for the office, you're in the wrong place. Hours will be flexible according to your schedule and museum needs.

ALHFAM Archives Internship
Old Sturbridge Village
Sturbridge, MA

Old Sturbridge Village seeks a college student or recent graduate interested in gaining direct hands-on experience archiving the records of the Association of Living History, Farm and Agricultural Museums (ALHFAM). The intern will work with ALHFAM and OSV staff. The intern will help preserve, arrange, describe, and catalog the collection, and develop finding aids. Orientation to the museum and specific training to complete the tasks will be provided. The intern will also have the opportunity to experience the workings of New England's largest outdoor history museum.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate for this internship will have a thorough understanding of archival theory, familiarity with aspects of computer sciences as they relate to archives (metadata, databases etc.) and must be extremely detail- oriented. The selection process will be competitive, with preference given to students or recent graduates with previous experience in museum studies coursework and/or working with historic objects and/or exhibits. Interested applicants must submit a written application and will be interviewed in person or by phone.

Stipend:

In return, the intern will receive a stipend of $1,500 through the ALHFAM organization, and shared lodging (with another summer intern) on the museum campus.

Hours:

The internship is for ten weeks from June 4, 2013 – August 11, 2013. The intern will work three days a week, on a regular schedule established with the intern’s supervisor. The work day is from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. The intern may opt to work additional days as a costumed historian, if so desired and opportunities exist, to expand the scope and depth of the experience.
