ALHFAM — WHAT’S THAT?

Are you a farmer? No? I’m not either. But I’m often asked that very question by museum colleagues who want to know why I belong to ALHFAM – the Association for Living History, Farm and Agricultural Museums.

ALHFAM has been around for almost 40 years, supporting living history sites, but also providing professional training and support to traditional museums across North America and Europe that do hands-on programming.

Why should you join another professional association? ALHFAMers are renowned for their willingness to share their knowledge, research and skills — and to laugh at the quirks of their daily experiences. The ALHFAM listserv is constantly abuzz with the latest issues and concerns in museum operations.  Publications, conferences, and workshops provide opportunities to network, share information, and meet new friends and consultants.

ALHFAM membership is a good value.  An attraction for many of our institutional members is free and unlimited postings on the alhfam.org publicly accessible employment page, as well as a free link to your museum’s website.  Our website’s primary users are people looking for living history and museum sites to visit in their region. ALHFAM’s conferences and workshops are affordable and provide opportunities to learn specialized skills rarely found in other venues.

ALHFAM represents a diverse group of professionals, from interpreters, tour guides and educators, to curators and conservators, to farmers and administrators.  The next time you or a staff member have a question about a historical skill, restoring a building or developing a new school program and you wonder where to turn for the answer, the answer might just be ALHFAM.  And you don’t have to be a farmer to belong.
