Local History Author
Virginia, Delaware, DC, and Louisiana

Arcadia Publishing, the nation's leading publisher of local and regional photographic history books, is seeking authors to write new titles for our various series, including Images of America, Postcard History, Images of Sports, Images of Rail, and Black America. These books can be found in chain and local bookstores throughout the United States. We pay for all expenses involved in the book production, and provide a full publicity and sales team to assist in promoting and selling the book. We are a traditional publisher, and award royalties and complimentary copies to all of our authors.

The job requires the author to compile approximately 200 authentic, vintage photographs and to write accompanying captions, as well as a short introduction to the book and short chapter introductions. The necessary subject matter is the history of the place where they have lived for some time. We are looking for authors in Virginia, Delaware, Louisiana, and Washington, D.C. though authors from other regions will also be considered.

Authors should possess a strong passion for the history of their town, city, or region and access to archives. A significant background in writing is not necessary, though a background in local history, archiving, and/or preservation is. The ideal candidate will have close ties to historical societies, genealogical societies, local libraries, and/or preservation foundations. The job is ideal for a local historian interested in a side project, or a museum or historical society who wishes to display and provide public access to their archived photographs.
