The Heritage Farm Museum

The Heritage Farm Museum of Loudoun County is seeking qualified interns for Summer 2010.  The Heritage Farm Museum is Loudoun County’s museum of agriculture.  We are dedicated to preserving, promoting, and bringing to life the history of farming and the rich agricultural heritage of Loudoun County. The Heritage Farm Museum specializes in interactive museum exhibits and standard of learning-based educational programs for elementary age students. The Museum seeks one intern specializing in collections care and one intern specializing in museum education.

Responsibilities for the Collections Intern will range from general gallery support to special projects including: assisting the Curator with the inventory and re-housing of the Museum’s permanent collection, accessioning new collections items, and assisting with routine collections maintenance.

The Education Intern will provide support to staff for the Museum’s Standard of Learning-based school programs.  Intern will be responsible for developing and implementing new programs under the direction of the Curator.

Interns will have the opportunity to work with all staff members and will gain exposure to all aspects of the Museum’s daily operations.

Applicants must have excellent organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills, special attention to detail, and strong computer skills. Museum Education Intern

250-260 hours

Position Description:  The Education Intern’s work will support educational programming initiatives.  The intern will provide support for the development and evaluation of new programs that meet the Standards of Learning for Virginia.  Activities will include administrative support, historical and scientific research, public outreach, and development of lesson plans in a Museum setting.  The intern will report to the Curator and Manager. 

Learning Objectives/Goals:
  Gain practical experiences in designing, implementing, and analyzing educational programs.  Learn how to identify and research potential new markets.  Research and interpret historical and scientific narratives pertaining to Loudoun County, agriculture, and rural life in Northern Virginia.  Learn to analyze individual program outcomes and determine whether or class goals have been met.

Minimum Requirements:  Undergraduate or graduate student with major coursework in education, history, science, visitor studies, museum studies or a reasonably related field.  Previous experience conducting educational programs desired (not necessarily in informal learning environments).  Strong organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills a must.  Computer skills, particularly with Excel and Word, preferred.  Interest in agriculture and local history a plus. 

Specific Projects:
  The intern will develop one new museum program.  This will include researching subject matter, writing a lesson plan, developing a budget, collecting materials needed for any hands-on projects, and teaching this program at least once.
 

Collections Intern

250-260 hours

Position Description: Gain valuable experience in the museum field and intern at the Heritage Farm Museum.  The Heritage farm museum of Loudoun County is seeking a collections intern for 2010.  Prospective intern will help inventory and re-house our permanent collections, create condition reports, and inventory databases.  Intern will develop conservation strategies and storage solutions for artifacts accessioned into the museum collection.  The intern will report to the Curator.

Minimum Requirements:
  Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree in History, Public History, Library Science, Museum Studies or related field and at least one year of graduate study to apply.  Strong organizational skills a must.  Computer skills, particularly with Excel and Word, preferred.  Interest in agriculture and local history a plus.
