History Interpreter, History Interpretation Dept.

Description:

The Interpretation & Events Division provides meaningful learning opportunities for Mount Vernon’s one million annual visitors. Through a diverse portfolio of interpretive experiences, engaging public programs, and special events, we expand each guest’s understanding of and appreciation for our nation’s Founding Father.
The Department of History Interpretation, one of the Division’s six operating units, manages interpretive operations at the Mansion and Washington’s Tomb, provides walking tours around the Historic Area, and supports a variety of special guest programming.  

Division-wide Principles:

Responsibilities:

  • Create a positive learning environment for guests of all ages and backgrounds by being hospitable, approachable, and professional in appearance and demeanor.
  • Provide guests with accurate, interesting, and pertinent historical information about George Washington and Mount Vernon in an engaging, timely, and articulate manner. Answer guest questions and tailor delivery techniques to maximize impact whenever possible. Follow departmental interpretive strategies in order to effectively integrate your interpretation into the total guest learning experience.
  • Assist the Interpretive Supervisor with the daily opening, closing, and security of the Mansion. Actively monitor and protect assigned positions in and around the Mansion and report any incidents and/or concerns related to historic structures and the collections held within.
  • Assist the Interpretive Supervisor with the implementation of emergency procedures when necessary to ensure safety for our guests, historic structures, and collections.   
  • Assist the Interpretive Supervisor with special tours, programs, and other projects as needed. 


Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required
  • Must work well with a diverse audience and have a sincere interest in history
  • Must be responsible, flexible, punctual, and able to work well under pressure
  • Ability to work creatively and effectively as a member of a team is mandatory 


Special Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand/walk for long periods on varying surfaces, inside and outside, and in a variety of conditions
  • Must comply with: departmental dress code (period dress) and departmental standard operating procedures
  • Must work frequent weekends, evenings, and holidays

Education Center Associate, Education Center Operations Dept. 
 

Description:

The Interpretation & Events Division provides meaningful learning opportunities for Mount Vernon’s one million annual visitors. The Office of Education Center Operations, one of the Division’s six operating units, manages the Donald W. Reynolds Education Center and the Phoebe Apperson Hearst Learning Center.  

Division-wide Principles:

  • Exceed guest expectations – be friendly, respectful, engaging, and flexible. Always remember that this visit may be their first and only.
  • Encourage a meaningful appreciation of George Washington – keep him first and use his unparalleledlegacy of character and leadership to inspire.
  • Engage yourself in the mission of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association – take responsibility for your continued development and commit to collaboration. Care for your colleagues and be proud of what we accomplish together.


Responsibilities:

  • Interact with young guests (generally ages 3-8) and their parents/guardians in the Hands-on History Center in order to provide high-quality learning opportunities in a safe and friendly atmosphere. Assist the Education Center Manager with maintaining the Hands-on History Center and its interactives as well as developing new and creative child-friendly programming.
  • Welcome local and visiting teachers in the Teacher Resource Center. Distribute materials and assist with the use of electronic and print resources.
  • Assist the Education Center Manager with the daily care, routine maintenance, and ongoing improvement of the Education Center exhibition.  Staff the exhibition for special tours and assist in developing useful and engaging programming.
  • Assist the Education Center Manager in reviewing, evaluating, and improving enrichment materials related to on-site student programs and experiences.  


Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, and clerical skills required
  • Must work well with a young audience and have a sincere interest in history
  • Must be detail-oriented and able to work well under pressure
  • Must be able to work creatively and effectively as a member of a team
  • Museum and/or teaching experience preferred

Historic Trades Interpreter, Historic Trades Dept.

Description:

The Department of Historic Trades, one of the Division’s six operating units, manages interpretive operations at the George Washington: Pioneer Farmer site, George Washington’s Distillery & Gristmill, and the Blacksmith Shop.  The Department also supports several special student and guest programs.

Division-wide Principles:

  • Exceed guest expectations – be friendly, respectful, engaging, and flexible. Always remember that this visit may be their first and only.
  • Encourage a meaningful appreciation of George Washington – keep him first and use his unparalleledlegacy of character and leadership to inspire.
  • Engage yourself in the mission of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association – take responsibility for your continued development and commit to collaboration. Care for your colleagues and be proud of what we accomplish together.


Responsibilities:

  • Develop and perform demonstrations of 18th-century trades and crafts (including milling, distilling, blacksmithing, farming, cooking, spinning and weaving, among others), in order to produce an immersive experience and effectively exhibit Washington’s entrepreneurship, innovation, and self-sufficiency
  • Assist the daily manager/lead interpreter with the opening, closing, cleaning, and maintenance of relevant sites. Operate machinery and handle tools and equipment in a safe and appropriate manner. Assist with the implementation of emergency procedures when necessary to ensure safety for guests and staff
  • Actively grow your knowledge of Washington’s plantation and 18th-century trades and crafts in order to continually enhance your interpretive ability
  • Assist with special tours, student programs, and other projects as needed


Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required
  • Must work well with a diverse audience and have a sincere interest in history
  • Must be responsible, flexible, punctual, able to lift 50lbs., and perform all manner of physical labor
  • Ability to work creatively and effectively as a member of a team is mandatory

Farm Manager
Gallant Farm Preserve
Delaware, OH


Preservation Parks of Delaware County is currently seeking a part-time Farm Manager position.  This job will plan and operate the agricultural component of a historical farm and program, intended to depict farm life in the time period 1930-1940.

The 1930s-40's farmstead at Gallant Farm Preserve includes a farmhouse museum, granary and barnyard, demonstration crop fields and orchard, and other features of a typical family farm.

Responsibilities: This position plans and directs the implementation of historical farm agriculture and animal husbandry programs including research of historically correct agricultural methods, crops, animals, structures, etc.; provides interpretation regarding the historical farm and its operation to the general public; wears period style clothing while performing farm work and providing interpretation; performs a variety of agricultural, animal husbandry, and maintenance tasks to ensure efficient operation of farm (e.g. tills, plants, cares for, and harvest crops using historical methods and machinery; cares for farm animals; chops and hauls firewood; maintains and repairs farm equipment, fences, buildings, etc.); regularly maintains the barn, outbuildings, and the home while coordinating maintenance projects with the Operations staff.

Requirements: A minimum of an Associate’s degree in agriculture, education, American history, natural resources, or related field, and 3 years experience working at a historical farm or village, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; skill in historical interpretation, agricultural practices, care of farm animals, and the use or operation of a variety of early 1900’s and modern day tools and equipment (e.g., saws, drills, grinders, planers, plows, harrows, mowers, planters, etc.); possess practical knowledge of agricultural history, practices, and methods of the early 1900’s. Experience working at a historical farm is a plus.

Hours: 24 hours per week – evening, weekend and holiday hours required.

Compensation: Starting at $16.35 an hour depending on experience and education. Vacation and sick leave, with health benefits and OPERS retirement available.

Educator Specialist

Ship to Shore Program:  Seasonal, Part-Time position, weekdays and weeknights during Spring 2013 sessions of Ship to Shore, the School Overnight Program and Anchor watch, the Scout Overnight Program at Mystic Seaport Museum. Duties include preparing/leading experiential education in maritime history for 4th- 9th graders, conduct study tours, workshops, climb rigging and spend nights aboard ship as overnight staff. Maintenance Assistant
Pamplin Historical Park

Status:  Part-time, hourly
Salary Range:  $9.17 to $9.38 per hour depending on experience

Primary Duties:

The Maintenance Assistant is directly responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of Pamplin Historical Park's buildings and grounds.

Responsibilities:

The Maintenance Assistant will:

  • Perform general janitorial maintenance of all Park buildings.
  • Participate in cutting and trimming of lawns and meadows.
  • Maintain trees and shrubbery.
  • Perform leaf and litter removal.
  • Perform trail construction and repair.
  • Safely operate electrical hand tools and grounds equipment, including chainsaws, weed eaters, blowers, and tractors.
  • Possess the ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies related to weather events, equipment failures, or any other facilities problems.
  • Assist other departments and participate in special events as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Rating Factors:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of relevant hands-on experience.
  • A positive work record demonstrating reliability.
  • Effective verbal communications skills.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds repeatedly
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • A valid Virginia Driver’s License.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
